Thinking in Spanish
The preterite tense lets you talk about things that happened and are finished. Without it, you're stuck in the present tense forever. The preterite answers: 'What did you do?' 'What happened?' The good news is that regular preterite conjugations follow clear patterns. The tricky part is the irregular verbs — but you already know many of them.
