Building Sentences
The distinction between 'ser' and 'estar' is the first major hurdle for English speakers learning Spanish. Both mean 'to be,' but they are NOT interchangeable. Using the wrong one can change your meaning entirely. Think of 'ser' as describing WHAT something is, and 'estar' as describing HOW or WHERE something is.
