GDPR in Practice
A data breach is not just a sophisticated cyberattack. It is any security incident that leads to the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorized disclosure of, or access to personal data. Sending an email with personal data to the wrong recipient is a breach. Losing an unencrypted USB drive with employee records is a breach. Leaving a filing cabinet unlocked overnight in an unsecured area is a breach. The definition is deliberately broad because the risk to individuals is the same regardless of how the breach occurred.
